PROMOCIJA GOZDARSTVA IN POKLICOV V GOZDARSTVU

Promoting youth leadership in forestry and environmental enterpreneurship

Tam smo spoznali značilnosti nekaj drevesnih vrst, si ogledali žarišče podlubnikov in spoznali invazivno rastlino barvilnico.

On November 5, foresters from the Novo mesto Regional Unit presented the work of the Slovenia Forest Service to students of the Wood Technician programme at the School Centre Novo mesto, within the framework of the Erasmus+ project Green Path.

The day began in the classroom, where the students were introduced to forests in Slovenia, the fields of work of the Slovenia Forest Service, the risks encountered in forestry work, and the equipment used in daily practice. As foresters are primarily field-based professionals, we soon moved to a nearby forest.

There, the students learned about the characteristics of several tree species, observed an infestation site of bark beetles, and became familiar with the invasive plant dyer’s greenweed. We also carried out a measurement of a permanent sample plot, assessing the quality of all trees, which later proved useful when we returned to the classroom.

Based on the assessed quality, measured diameter at breast height (DBH), and the current price list, we calculated the economic value of all trees on the plot. At the end of the day, representatives of the Department of Forestry at the Biotechnical Faculty joined us and presented the forestry study programme as well as the secondary-school forestry camp.

In this way, we introduced forestry students to the forest and wood from a different perspective and presented them with opportunities to continue their education in a related field. The students became familiar with professions connected to forestry and learned about possibilities for cooperation with faculties and the Slovenia Forest Service.
